But the assembly at Malcolm E. Nettingham Middle School took an exciting twist when Dr. Jane Foley of the Milken Educator Awards took the stage to reveal that fifth-grade teacher Emily Litz was New Jersey’s only recipient of the 2024-25 Milken Educator Award, often referred to as the "Oscars of Teaching."
Along with the honor, Litz received an unrestricted $25,000 prize and made history as the first-ever Milken Award winner from Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public Schools.
“Emily Litz prepares students for bright futures by infusing practical, engaging, and high-level lessons into her classroom every day,” said Dr. Foley. Acting Commissioner Dehmer added, “Emily’s dedication stands out for creating an inclusive environment that truly focuses on each of her students.”the Milken Educator Award celebrates outstanding educators nationwide, inspiring teachers and students alike.
Litz was praised for her innovative teaching methods, transforming her classroom to engage students in hands-on learning. From encouraging students to apply for “jobs” in her classroom to hosting campfire-style storytelling, Litz creates a nurturing space that makes learning fun and meaningful. Her influence extends to her colleagues as well, through her work as a teacher mentor and curriculum leader. In April, she’ll attend the Milken Educator Awards Forum in Los Angeles, joining a national network of educators dedicated to transforming education for students nationwide.
Emily Litz’s contributions to Malcolm E. Nettingham Middle School go far beyond her fifth-grade classroom. A champion of differentiated instruction, Litz tailors her lessons to meet the diverse needs of her students, many of whom are new to the country or have varying levels of academic skills. Using tools like the Full Option Science System (FOSS) kits, she engages students in inquiry-based science lessons that develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Her creative approach to teaching includes a “campfire” setup where students share writing projects, glitter for good luck before tests, and even a classroom job application process, where students apply for roles like “attendance aide” and “supply manager.” Her math lessons encourage students to understand the "why" behind their strategies, fostering a deeper understanding of the material.
Beyond her classroom, Litz is an active leader in her school district, regularly volunteering to share her expertise in special education and inclusive teaching practices with colleagues. She has contributed to the development of curriculum guidelines, led high-impact tutoring programs, and served on a committee to create a standards-based report card for fifth grade. Litz also emphasizes family engagement by providing weekly updates and photos of classroom activities to keep parents connected to their children's learning.
The Milken Educator Award not only recognizes Litz’s achievements but also opens doors for further leadership opportunities. Along with her $25,000 prize, she’ll join the Milken Educator Network, connecting her with top educators across the country for mentorship and collaboration. As part of her award, she will attend an all-expenses-paid Milken Educator Awards Forum in Los Angeles, where she’ll have the chance to connect with other educators and discuss ways to drive positive change in education.
